It is not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves”- these famous words of Shakespeare are the sources of motivation for the Department of English, Derozio Memorial College. Inspiration to nurture self-belief and self-discipline and constant encouragement to delve deep into the ocean of literature help the students of the Department to love their subject and excel as true human beings. In its initial days the Department used to teach English (General) and Honours was introduced in 2002.

The teachers make every possible effort to meet all the queries of the students pertaining both to their studies and their personality development. They try to play the role of mentor and friend and help them cope with the ever-demanding society at large. The Department has its own seminar library with lending facility to help the students with different kinds of books. It organises Debates, Seminars, Interactive Sessions and Academic Exchange Programmes to enhance their confidence both in the subject and in themselves.

More importantly, the Department organizes Social Extension Programmes to cater to the society and help the students develop as responsible citizens. Students like Subhro Saha (our first student to crack NET), Souvik Mondal (First class first in B.A. Final Exam, 2015) and several others have added feathers to the cap of the Department. Our students are our pride and it is a team work of both the teachers and students that enables us to run the Department smoothly.
