The Department of History started its journey in the year 1996 with the introduction of under graduate General course initially. However, History honours was introduced six years later in the year 2002 and was affiliated under University of Calcutta. However, in the year 2009 the College and the Department transferred its affiliation to the newly founded West Bengal State University at Barasat.
Presently, the Department is composed with five teachers dedicated with the academic deliverance of the subject coming from variant specialisation. Seminar library is furnished with syllabus oriented texts and reference books with lending facility.The teachers try their best to solve all their queries related to their subjects .Besides teachers also guided the students for their career and over all development. The teachers of the Department are not restricted to college work but they are also involved as Examiners, question paper setters of University conducted examinations. To make the lectures interesting teachers use power point presentation. Projects and home assignments are given to the students and the assignments are checked by teachers. After completing graduation most of the students takes admission in Post graduate studies and completed the course.
The Department had successfully organized a National Seminar in 2011 and 2016. During pandemic period the Department along with English department organised webinars.
Educational tours are conducted to inculcate interests among students. Recently students visited Alipore Museum and National library and prepared project on Alipore Museum. Student seminars are also arranged so that students can freely express their thoughts and ideas. The students are very enthusiastic in co- curricular activities like quizzing and debate. Special lectures, workshops and awareness programmers are usually conducted to enrich student’s knowledge. A wall magazine “Chitralekha” is put up every year by students on different themes.. An Historical Organisation by the name “Paschimbanga Itihas Samsad” had selected our college as the venue for their 32nd annual Conference in 2016. Through all these activities we hope that our students will be highly motivated in building a very successful and prosperous future.
TEACHING LEARNING PROCESS
In the beginning of each semester the class routine and syllabus are distributed among the students.Classes are conducted by all the faculty members of the Department. Reading list and class notes are provided to the students regularly. To make the learning interesting ,power point presentation are prepared for the students. Home assignments are assigned to the students to evaluate the understanding of class teaching.Books from seminar library are issued to the students for preparation of examination.In the midst of semester, internal tests are conducted to prepare the students for end semester examination. Faculties helps the slow learners by clearing their doubts beyond the class room. Educational excursions are conducted for the students to gather first hand knowledge from different historical sites. Besides students seminars and debates are organised so that students can express their thoughts and ideas. Special invited lectures are arranged so that advanced learners can gather more knowledge on different topics.
