"It is not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves”- these famous words of Shakespeare are the sources of motivation for the Department of English, Derozio Memorial College. Fostering self-belief, discipline, and a passion for literature is central to the Department's mission, encouraging students to deeply engage with their studies and grow into well-rounded individuals. Initially offering English (General), the Department expanded to include Honours in 2002.
The faculty is dedicated to addressing all the inquiries made by the students related to academics and personal development, acting as mentors to help students navigate the challenges of modern society. The Department's seminar library, complete with a lending facility, provides access to a variety of books. Additionally, it organises seminars, debates, interactive sessions, and academic exchange programmes to build a sense of confidence in both their subject and themselves.
Significantly, the Department invests special efforts into nurturing the first generation learners. Regular certificate courses ensure that their communicative and intellectual faculties are properly taken care of. A blend of traditional and innovative ICT based teaching-learning process inspires the students to incorporate the positives of the digital world into their personal development. Students' get guided platforms in the form of wall magazines and departmental literary magazine "Zephyr" to hone their creative skills and critical thinking. The collaboration between faculty and students is crucial to the smooth operation of the Department, and our students' accomplishments are a source of immense pride.
We, the teachers of the department, earnestly believe that Creative Writing undoubtedly sharpens students’ ability to express their thoughts clearly and vividly. It further gives them an opportunity to think beyond the ordinary, and they can use their imagination to express their ideas in their own way. Besides emphasizing on the importance of Creative Writing we also guide and encourage them to think and write critically. Our students eagerly contribute to the departmental literary magazine "Zephyr", as well as to the departmental wall magazine thereby showcasing their literary talents. Their poems, articles, essays, short stories, literary analysis etc. bear the stamp of their originality and we find in them the urge to explore more. Moreover, our students willingly participate in debate and quiz competitions organized by the department.
Our course structure offers British literature and language alongside Indian literature and other selected literatures of the world. We impart quality education by using effective and efficient teaching tools. Our department lays special emphasis on direct teaching method which includes close textual analysis. We encourage our students to actively participate in classroom interactive sessions. Besides this we opt for PowerPoint Presentation, effectively use Information and Communication Technology (ICT) teaching methods and Learning Management System (LMS). We often use the modern audio-visual aids and techniques to stimulate imagination and to facilitate the understanding of the students e.g. watching thought provoking movies and doing in-depth analysis of the same. We motivate our students to participate in literary discussions and also help them prepare for Oral Presentation. We encourage the students in writing projects on different literary topics pertaining to the syllabus. We conduct online Google Meet classes for the students wherein we engage them in interactive discussions related to literary texts and theories. It is a new-age method which we have started to adopt since Covid days. We also organize educational excursions for the students, such as taking them to theatres to watch celebrated plays by renowned playwrights e.g. Swapnasandhani's adaptation of William Shakespeare's 'Hamlet'. This in turn helps in their artistic as well as intellectual growth.
