About

The journey of the Department of Commerce was started in 2000 under the affiliation of the University of Calcutta. However, in 2008 the affiliation of the college was shifted from the University of Calcutta to West Bengal State University, Barasat.

Presently the Department offers B.Com Honours and B.Com General Courses under Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) and the newly introduced NEP system. There are two full time teachers and three State Aided College Teachers (SACT) in the department. The department has three dedicated class rooms, one IT Laboratory and a well-stocked departmental library. Apart from the regular lecture method teaching, the teachers use modern teaching techniques like smart class rooms, presentations through audio visuals, power point presentation, LMS etc. The students have shown satisfactory results in university examinations and a number of students are working in different industries. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the teachers have extensively used online teaching methods to support the students.

The department regularly organises various co-curricular activities like debate, poster competition, departmental seminars, educational tours and career- counselling programmes. The departmental magazine “Living on the Edge” was published in 2022-23. We are trying to build an effective network with the nearby industries to offer placements and career opportunities to our students.

Best Practices

  • A section of students of the department are the first generation learners. The teachers take personalised care to such students. Remedial classes for slow-learners are regularly organised by the department.
  • We try to nurture the creativity of the students through encouraging them to participate in various co-curricular activities like debate, poster competition, departmental seminars, educational tours etc. The departmental magazine “Living on the Edge” was published in 2022-23 where a number of students submitted their writings.
