Derozio Memorial College was set up in 1996 with spontaneous co-operation of local inhabitants and the sustaining effort of the chairman and members of Rajarhat-Gopalpur Municipality. The college was named after Henry Louis Vivian Derozio the doyen of `Young Bengal Movement’ and the first Anglo-Indian Poet of the 19th Century. As a poet, Derozio came into our cultural life as a Stormy Bird who sang new songs of life. As a teacher, he showed new feeds of humanism.

Since inception, Derozio Memorial College was affiliated to the University of Calcutta. Later on it was affiliated to the West Bengal State University in the year 2008. The college got affiliation from UGC in the year 2004 under section 2(f) and 12(b). The college has been assessed by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in April, 2005 and it has been duly accredited (Grade- ‘B’). The peer team has appreciated the notable progress of the budding college in translating its vision and goals towards attaining the laid down objectives through a process-oriented approach.

Sprawling over a huge campus about 2.5 acres, the two storied college building with a beautiful garden in front, houses about 4500 students in Arts, Science and Commerce Streams having honours in almost all subjects. The teachers of the college strive collectively for all round excellence of the college. They have been achieving milestones together and are actively contributing towards keeping the Derozio Memorial College banner flying high. We hope to create an atmosphere of reverence for education and a healthy environment where work, sports and co-curricular activities will mould our students and spur them on to be the brightest and the best.

Our mission is to provide leadership that promotes safe and orderly learning where students are challenged, engaged and supported towards achieving academic standards while developing their social skills at the same time. In order to accomplish our goals, the parents and the teachers must work together to inculcate certain values in the students which will help them to reach the highest level of achievement.

We are proud to announce that Derozio Memorial College has been selected as one of the 13 colleges in West Bengal and among 200 colleges in India where the community college scheme, newly introduced by Ministry of Human Resource and Development, Govt. of India will be implemented as a pilot case from the academic session July, 2013.

The Community College is an alternative system of education which aims to empower individuals through appropriate skill development leading to gainful employment in collaboration with the local industry and community. In this scheme, a community college registered for offering academic programmes at the levels of certificate, diploma and associate degree. The community college offer the advantage of tailoring programmes to local needs and state based requirements by using approaches that will be most acceptable to workers in the given community. A community college may be defined as an institution which is “For the Community”, “By the Community” and “Of the Community” and entitled to award an Associate Degree (AD) as its highest degree. It offers educational opportunities to all sections of society, particularly the marginalized and disadvantaged. A community can be locality based, region based, trade based or occupation based and even ICT enabled service based.

Now, in its 16th Year Derozio Memorial College continues to move forward in the true spirit of ability-driven education while sensitizing its students to the needs of the community besides inculcating values like integrity, fortitude and acceptance of individual differences. The likelihood of achieving this will be strengthened by the Pilot Community College Scheme that facilitates an overall development of the human personality in all its dimensions – intellectual, physical, social, moral and economical, which will help to uplift the community of the Rajarhat-Gopalpur and its surroundings. It will be the constant effort of the College to endow its students with sensitivity and empathy that will enable them to reach out to the World in effectual service and untold creativity.
